It is with a heavy heart that I write this letter in light of the recent mass shooting that occurred in Virginia Beach. I knew one of the victims. And I assure you, that each one of those men and women that left for work that morning fully expected to make it home for dinner that night. It makes us all realize how fragile life can be and to not take a day for granted. Make sure you hug those that are valuable in your life and tell them what they mean to you.
In that spirit, AIA Virginia celebrated those that are valuable to it by holding an Open House on May 16 to welcome members and the public to the new headquarters located in the Bookbindery Building. Approximately 100 guests attended to enjoy barbecue, brews [or soda], gourmet cupcakes, and fellowship. Many of our Allied Members attended in support as well as elected officials such as Virginia Delegate, Betsy Carr. The event was viewed so favorably, that I plan to make this an annual occurrence.
The Conference on Architecture (A’19) occurred June 5 – 9 in Las Vegas. Here, the Institute held its annual business meeting to vote on Resolutions and to elect its new leadership. Members were exposed to a number of captivating tours and educational sessions while having the ability to connect with friends within our Region and around the United States at various social functions. The conference culminated with the celebration of the Class of 2019 Fellows at The Wynn.
As we progress through the month, I’m asking that you join us on Friday, June 21 for the Virtual Membership Meeting. It’s a 45-minute time investment where you can hear the latest happenings of AIA Virginia. This includes an update on our publication, Inform’s rebranding, and future re-release. Please consider registering by clicking here.
It’s such an honor to serve each and every one of you in this capacity and I thank you daily for allowing me to do so.
Sincerely,
Corey Clayborne, AIA, MBA
Executive Vice President
